Vitamin B12 / Cyanocobalamin

Cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12)

Vitamin B12 is the vitamin that occurs the least in nature. The name vitamin B12 is a generic term for a specific group of corrinoids that contain cobalt and are biologically active in animals and human. This group of corrinoids is also known as cobalamins. The main forms of vitamin B12 are hydroxocobalamin, adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin, the latter two being the active coenzyme forms. Cyanocobalamin is a form of vitamin B12 that is widely used in the industry due to its availability and stability. The majority of vitamin B12 is stored in the liver and then absorbed in an active mechanism.

Main function

Protein distribution and blood synthesis

Biological functions

  • Production of blood cells and improved growth
  • Production of the coenzyme 5-desoxyadenylcobalamin, which is necessary for the utilisation of propionic acid and thus for the production of glucose and lactose in ruminants
  • Production of the coenzyme methylcobalamin, which is necessary for methylation reactions, e.g. for the metabolism of methionine
  • Coenzyme in the metabolism of nucleic acids, proteins, fats and carbohydrates

Benefits for the animal

Improved growth and improved reproductive performance
