DL-methionine

DL-methionine is an essential amino acid used in animal feed. In addition to its essential role as a protein building block and precursor to cysteine, methionine is involved in the metabolism of compounds such as choline, creatine and adrenaline by releasing a methyl group and forming S-adenosyl-methionine in the methyl donor pathway. Thus, methionine indirectly plays an important role in intermediate metabolism. DL-methionine is the first limiting amino acid for poultry, however, it is the third limiting amino acid for piglets and pigs. It is normally used in food for cats and dogs.
