Heparin Sodium

Heparin sodium is used to treat cardiac, aortic and arterial thrombosis. It is also used to treat pulmonary thrombosis and thromboembolism as well as disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Heparin sodium is derived from animal tissue such as the intestinal mucosa of pigs.

  • Molecular weight: Chemically, it is glycosaminoglycans consisting of a variable number of amino sugars with a molar mass between 4,000 and 40,000 daltons (frequency peak about 15,000). The unfractionated heparin (also called standard heparin) used medicinally has a molecular weight of 6,000 to 30,000 daltons (Da).
