Betaine is the trimethyl derivative of the amino acid glycine and is widely used as a feed additive for livestock such as poultry, pigs, and ruminants and aquaculture.

Main function

It protects against cellular osmotic stress.

Biological functions

The betaine molecule has two important functions: as a methyl donor in the process of transmethylation and as an osmolyte, the effects of which protect cells against osmotic stress, lack of water, high salinity and high temperatures.

Methyl donor function: free methyl groups are generated for several metabolic reactions, such as the synthesis of creatine and carnitine. Methyl group metabolism is key to preventing fatty liver syndrome.

Betaine reduces the need for methionine and choline thanks to methyl donation.

Benefits for the animal

Betaine is used to improve the performance and carcass quality of the animal (lower carcass fat and higher lean carcass percentage).
