Vitamin B5 / Calcium D-Pantothenate

D-pantothenic acid was discovered in 1931 as a growth factor for microorganisms. It is found in two enzymes, coenzyme A (CoA) and acyl carrier protein (ACP), which are involved in many reactions in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Animals require D-pantothenic acid to synthesise coenzyme-A (CoA). D-pantothenic acid is hygroscopic and not very stable. Therefore, calcium D-pantothenate and D-panthenol are the forms of the vitamin used in practice.

Main function

Fat metabolism and energy conversion

Biological functions

D-pantothenic acid is found in two enzymes, coenzyme A and acyl carrier protein. Coenzyme A is necessary for acetylation in intermediate metabolism. It is essential in the citric acid cycle and forms the foundation for numerous syntheses which the body is able to perform when there is adequate pantothenic acid, namely the biosynthesis of long-chain fatty acids, phospholipids, cholesterol and steroid hormones. Only the optically active D-form is a vitamin.

Benefits for the animal

More efficient use of nutrients and improved performance.
